Onslow Chamber of Commerce and Industry Celebrates First Production at Wheatstone

The Onslow Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) has congratulated Chevron and the Wheatstone Joint Venture Participants on the commencement of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production at the Wheatstone Project and thanked them for the opportunities created throughout its construction phase, during which more than $455 million was spent with local Onslow businesses and organisations.

OCCI President Jason Varcoe said the opportunities presented to local business by Chevron over the past few years have been unprecedented.

“Not only has Chevron made policy changes to encourage buy-in of local business, they have also assisted with the establishment of critical platforms linking local businesses directly to tender opportunities, such as face-to-face forums and the ‘Onslow Connect’ directory,” Mr Varcoe said.

OCCI Chief Executive Officer Chantelle King commented that the tender process for Onslow businesses had come a long way since the Project first started.

“The OCCI, Chevron and other key partners have worked together to successfully increase the capacity of local businesses and link them directly with tender opportunities, resulting in a win-win situation for everyone,” Ms King said.

“Not only is the community of Onslow thriving, but Chevron now has access to excellent products and services right at their doorstep.”

On the back of this success, the OCCI has developed a Being Ready guide to support other communities where rapid industry growth may occur. The guide outlines the process the OCCI and Chevron had developed and implemented to achieve high levels of local business buy-in.

“The focus of Being Ready is to share lessons learned with local Chambers so they can effectively support local business during times of rapid industry growth, as well as inform industry and government about how they can provide support,” Ms King said.

“Being Ready explains how to define and promote local content, how to build the capacity of local businesses, how to identify and link opportunities and the communication strategies and additional support available to local Chambers.” Ms King said.

As Wheatstone transitions from a construction project to an operating LNG plant with a life expectancy of more than 30 years, the type of support services required also changes.

“Onslow businesses are now well established and positioned for ongoing work at Wheatstone. This is a really positive outcome for the local businesses as well as the broader community,” Mr Varcoe said.
